Juniper Bonsai Care

Top Tips And Techniques That You Must Know

Before dwelling into the subject of Juniper Bonsai Care lets us first spend some time in understanding the Juniper Bonsai properly. Juniper is one of the most frequently used species for genus for bonsai.

Juniper has many different species, which vary from each other based on their foliage colour and shape. Juniper Bonsai can live for many years, some have been known to stay alive till 200 years.

The most common varieties of juniper used for bonsai are Chinese Junipers, Juniperus rigida, Juniperus squmata, Juniperus Sabina, Juniperus Sargentii.

Junipers are outdoor plants that are grown in natural conditions under the open sky. They are brought indoors only for display, but need to be exposed frequently to natural outdoor conditions.

Juniper bonsai is very sensitive to excess watering. It is preferable to allow the plant to dry out slightly between consecutive watering periods. You can reconsider misting your juniper bonsai at regular interval as a part of your bonsai Care routine.

The bonsai pot in which the Juniper Bonsai is planted should have proper drainage holes so as to ensure that excess water is drained out from the soil. Presence of excess water may lead to the rotting of the roots and unhealthy condition of the Juniper Bonsai.

Pruning is also very important in your bonsai care routine. Since Juniper Bonsai has a very fast growth it requires regular pruning to keep its leaves compact and in shape. Its better to carry out the pruning act with your own hands instead of using scissors, as this could result in ugly scar marks on the leaves. Your Juniper Bonsai care program should also ensure that the plant remains healthy and properly maintained. You can consider wiring of your plant any time during the growing season.

Repotting of your juniper bonsai should be carried out every two years until it reaches the age of 10 years, then you could consider carrying out the repotting exercise on a required basis. As a part of Juniper bonsai care repotting should be done during the mid-spring season.

While repotting, prune out all the rotted roots, and ensure that the stone used in the soil mix is properly cleaned. If you find a large number of rotted roots then you must consider some treatment as part of your Juniper Bonsai Care.

You could plant the juniper bonsai in pure sphagnum moss. Sphagnum moss being water absorbent will soak in excess water, in addition the anti bacterial properties of Sphagnum moss will prevent any additional root rot.

Juniper Bonsai is most frequently affected by spider mites; hence you should spray a good house hold plant insecticide on your Juniper Bonsai. This can be done at a regular basis, once every month, or as and when required.

Using proper fertilizers is also an integral part of Juniper Bonsai Care. Excess use of fertilizers might result in a rapid growth of the plant; hence you should pay attentions to the amount of fertilizers being used.

Using a little diluted fertilizer once every six weeks should be good enough to have a steady balanced growth of your juniper bonsai.
